Struggling for Survival

In the recently revamped Comet Cable website their Digital Plans which were included under the "Whats New" section in their old website is not their anymore.

We wonder whether this means that Comet Cable has shelved plans for the roll out of their digital network and is waiting till some other organization acquires their operations.

It is really sad to see the country's pioneer pay television provider just dragging it's feet and struggling for survival. It is better for them to digitize transmission technology soon since the full scale relaunch of CBNsat and LBN is around the corner and also the launch of SLT's IPTV network will take place later during the year so unless they get their act together this may just spell the end of Comet Cable.

i'm a comet subscriber. i live in nugegoda. my comet antenna is 40 feet high. still the pictures are not as clear as my neighbour who has CBNSAT.

is LBN available in nugegoda ? i heard that their pics are also clear. if not i'll definitely go for CBNSAT !

comet is rubbish !

i'm telling you'll as a subscriber who used it for more than 5 years. those days we haven't had other options. now we have more deals to choose from.

Anyone wants to but comet cable connection??? Very cheep

My friend,

LBN is crystal clear, i'm sure, mainly because of their wired system. But have the people actually thought of the future. The future belongs to WIRELESS communication. The best option will be satellites. People simply wont want to draw wires here and there in the future if there is an equally good satellite network.

And there already is. (CBNsat not Comet!)

Not that i'm imposing this on you, but please think twice. LBN may have 60+ channels, but are they really premium quality for the price. Sooner or later CBNsat will catch up at anyrate.

LBN is available in a few areas of Nugegoda. Yes, thats the next problem. LBN is now low on finances, and they really need to raise prices or something. If they do not collect money soon, CBNsat's islandwide coverage will crush them. It will take a lot of time to draw cable everywhere (especially in Sri Lanka).

I've heard that LBN was to expand to certain areas only if they got a certain number of orders in an area. But will people really order LBN in an area that is not already covered. And how long it will take to draw the wires. The starting fee would have been payed off in monthly bills by the time the connections are made.

Also, the bigshot who launched LBN and was in the electricity something is no longer there. Because he used to be there only they fixed the first wires.

So think twice and choose whatr you think is best...

Make a informed decision.

LBN has the following premium channels that is not available on CBN.( Star World, Star Movies,Disney Toons, Disney,V,Bloomberg,Channel News asia,Sun Tv, Vijay)

CBN has the following premium channels that is not available on LBN.(A1, Pogo, Discovery,Travel and Living,SET, Zee Cafe,Zee Music, animal Planet, animax)radio channels also available.

thats the current situation,if you look at the future CBNsat is looking at 100+ premium channels and by FEB will sign up the third transponder with channel capacity of 18 more channels. They have signed up disney toon and disney.lined up are star world, star movies,SET max which will be showing world cup cricket.Of course they have to add more tamil channels such as sun TV, Vijay.

future plans of LBN still not announced other than going digital.

Comet is limited to 18 channels due to technology been analogue and no news or plans about their future other than revamping of their web site.they do have some legal issues due to TRC needing 2.4Ghz frequency for wimax launch and condition imposed to go digital by june 2007.expansion of customer base is also limited due to technology.

FTV is a big no no under current situ with all cable operators.

its your money make the decision after you are satisfied that you are getting the product that you want as its a investment.

But comet is the best because they have 10 sports and even the picture quality is very high though the other think differantly.

The technology may be old,but we are right there in clarity and content.

YOU DECIDE.
Which is better?

Quality (of Video/Audio) OR Quantity (of Channels)?

If quality,
high quality and few channels OR high quality and many channels.

If quantity,
good quality and many channels OR good quality and good quality channels.

If you choose "high quality and few channels" then you want Comet.

If you choose "high quality and many channels" then you want something that does not exist yet.

If you choose "good quality and many channels" then you want LBN.

If you choose "good quality and good quality channels" then you want CBNsat.

it defies any science as to how a analogue transmission can be of better quality than a digital transmission.

best example is mobiles. everyone know how analogue was and how digital is or have some people forgot as it is not there anymore??

There are inherent pros & cons of analogue vs digital.

Analogue Comet is prone to ghosting (double images) if the antenna does'nt have a clear line of sight to the Jaic tower, preferably less than 10km distance.

Digital CBN is prone to pixelation (small blocks on the screen, like a VCD)

More objective comparisons like price, channels, should be the priorities in making a choice.

I live in maharagama and have been connected with cometcable for five years now. Over the years, their service and picture quality have deteriorated. So much so that the latest prgramme they air is "gone with the wind". Each time a heavy gust of wind comes, the picture goes. However, this used to not happen earlier. There technical staff's explanation was that various obstacles have come up over the years and obstructed the line of sight of the antenna and jaic. Chances are that i will move to CBN, coz some channels on comet cannot be watched, but theres no reduction in price.

It's a pity to see Sri Lanka's premier pay tv network suffer the loss of customers and the disadvantages of outdated techonlogy. The cable tv industry in Sri Lanka has grown at an exponential pace over the years and its saddening to see the 1st cable network not being able to keep up with the newcomers.

Multivision faced a change of management, infighting and even a security threat to their premises at Anderson Ave. and i think they just didnt see the storm that was about to hit them in the form of CBN and LBN. Before the change of management, they requested the customers to buy the so called "digital" reciever. I dont know how many customers actually went ahead with the purchasing, but it was a false gimmick by the then management.

As a seasoned pay tv subscriber, ive had enough. Limited choice and low quality are not an option for the subscription i pay.

I am also a long standing customer of COmetCable being with them for a long time now but recently i experinced the same loss of signal that the above poster from maharagam is having. i informed there technical support they came and said the same thing (line of site,....etc) i think this is total bullshit they have probably decreased the signal strength to cut costs. well we cant do anything but move to LBN or CBNSAT which i will due in time for the world cup.

comet changed again the NDTV to Al Jezerah. Hope they will stick with it.

i am a comet subscriber for some time now.
Can somebody pls advice me what is the best option of the below three.

1.stay with comet & enjoy 18 channels (most of them unclear)
2.cancel comet contract & buy a cbnsat connection.
3.or wait till slt introduces cable tv.
