The LBN Channel List and Comet Digital Channel List look very very similar. I have a hunch.

See the "Tamil", "Hindi" and "Other" sections.

Is there something fishy going on?

Also, how could Comet get hold of 70 channels so suddenly. After all, their small cable networks too have been taken over by LBN. So Comet would have lost most of the channels if they could not broadcast it, according to the broadcast contracts.

Please don't take it wrongly. I will be very happy if Comet goes Digital soon, because then Dialog would surely take a step forward.

Best of Luck to Comet and their Digital Plans

Just two more weeks to experience the digital

@arnold perera,
Where did comet say that they will send information about moving to digital. They have been going digital for years. For them to change the equipment it will take another 2 months.

@qwerty

No idea. I spoke to guy named James Earl and he indicated that the new owners are based in India and that a team of people are expected in Sri Lanka for the launch of their Digital Services next month.

I was a Comet Cable subscriber from the inception and shifted to DTV about 3 months ago. Once Comet cable's new digital service has been fully tested and running without any issues, I plan to migrate back as I am not at all happy with DTH from DTV

podiman said...

Apart from the proposed channels there are more channels mention on the COMET magazine OCT 2007.

ZEE SPORTS
ANIMAX
POGO

Hope thet will come soon.

With new managment and digital will comet cover the whole island or is it going to be 25km radius???

kayhaytha said...

@qwerty

Since Comet will be using DVB-T technology, I guess that at least initially it's coverage will be confined to the present areas.
Since this requires 'line-of-sight', I do not think we can expect any reduction either in the heights of our antennae.
However, I am not a 'technical' person, so I could be wrong in this regard.

TechnoGuy Sri Lanka said...

DVB-T
Like our National Television channels today. Does NOT require line-of-sight, and uses normal antenna. But requires Digital DVB-T Tuner in TV instead of the Analogue Tuners we currently use in Sri Lanka.

DVB-MC
Like Comet Cable. Requires line-of-sight and the BBQ Grill-like antenna.

Comet Digital
Will use existing microwave network to broadcast in DVB-MC. Not terrestrial.

So Comet's coverage will be around 50 km. The signal will not deteorate until around 55 km because it is Digital. But for extra coverage, Comet will need a new transmitter.

Just for you information.

podiman said...

@TechnoGuy,
With Comet digital technology will the hight of the antenna come down or will it be the same. My comet antenna is too high right now.

Unknown said...

qwerty, According to technology since comet digital is DVB-MC, line of sight is needed, therefore you may need the same height of your antenna as it is now.

podiman said...

It seems that comet is using the channel 14 for their testing and that is why it is blanked most of the time. The starting day seems to be a top secret and it says in the coming MONTHS. ZEE SPORTS,
ANIMAX,and POGO are added to their list of channel.

Srilakvahini Satellite has teamed up with LBN Satellite to give their customers better choice of channels. Srilakvahini which started just ten months ago has covered most of the country, Srilakvahini's Director Jayathisha Tennakoon said.

Srilakvahini has been a satellite provider to more than 140 countries and now it expands to Australia due to the high demand in the country. Srilakvahini is a Sri Lankan channel, also produced by Sri Lankans. Srilakvahini is presently connected through Thai com satellite which gives them a chance to communicate throughout the world. Srilakvahini has joined hands with LBN so that all Sri Lankans also could enjoy this channel.

'Our main objective is to make all Sri Lankans in other countries feel at home by joining Srilakvahini,' Srilakvahini Director Rohan Pieries said. He also said that it's a pride for them as their staff members are all Sri Lankan citizens. They have a range of programmes for every person to enjoy.

They do not charge monthly rentals as it is a free channel. Srilakvahini has one of the largest coverage from Sri Lanka to the world. They have covered many countries such as, Asia, Europe, Middle-East, African countries, Russian Federation and Australia.

They hope to expand their channel throughout the world and extend channel hours, to 24 hours.
