The final stages of operation

It looks like the Comet Cable days are being numbered with all Star Channels, etc being off air the last few weeks. Subscribers are unable to contact anyone for information and it is best that subscribers complain to the TRC and hopefully some newspaper will take steps to highlight the Comet Cable scam.

Now it is obvious that the Comet Digital announcement was a total lie. The Website has not been updated and it seems that it is 99% finished. News that Dialog has purchased Comet Cable is false and maybe another tactic by the down trodden company to retain subscribers.

The best course of action is for subscribers to refrain from paying monthly rentals. Many subscribers are moving to Dialog TV, LBN, etc. It looks like very soon this blog will have to be renamed "Late Comet Cable Forum".

Hi All,

ZERO comments...........
well well, its a sad end for the pioneer!
What are they up to? I am sure some provider will buy over the customer base. I was a comet subscriber since 1999 up to 2006.
Lost confidence in their methods and left.
Too much shit to sort out for any company taking over, it seems. Lets see.

stay cool.

that what i was told.

I reckon they are dead and gone. What is left is all FTA channels. I think even that will be finish by the end of the month. Must find a way to get the BBQ mesh down to sell it as scrap.

i requested comet to disconnect and take the antenna and the equipment. i requested 2 weeks before still did not come. i called to day and they say to give one more week. Seems like they guys are very bussy disconnecting they need 3 weeks notice in prior.
Seems the only team that works at multivision is the disconnection team.

Unknown said...

@roshan,
Why bother to call them. Get it down and sell them as scrap, atleast you will get something if they take it out there is nothing for you. Do they refund any money?

kayhaytha said...

@roshan
Please inform us when your antenna is finally removed. My neighbour switched to DTV in Jan but his antenna has still not been removed. Maybe you have to offer a 'something' to the disconnection team to hasten the process :)

@podiman
Be cautious before you dispose of the equipment as scrap. It legally belongs to Comet and the buggers can create problems for you if and when they ever call over to collect it. (Unless you shift residences and cannot be traced - hehehe)

@ai,
If you can get it down from India it will be much more cheaper. Please check Dish tv website you can see the prices. I would advise you to hang on for another month or so as BIG TV is starting in India.

star said...

@ai,

In your channel list, some channels are missing. For example, under Tamil list SUN TV is not in your list.

Wait for few more days until BIG TV starts. They will give you 240+ channels for you at the same rate.

Wait..wait..wait..for BIG TV. It is realy BIG.

Unknown said...

@star,
I reckon you have to get the sun package separatly and pay extra. You are right waite for BIG TV, thing might change for the customes. Hang on.

AI said...

ya but will it be available at sri lanka ??

Unknown said...

@ai,
That I am not sure if it will be available in SL but the price in India for DTH will come down. Even now Dish TV prices are going down in SL. It was SLRs24000 before now it is around SLRs18000. Hang on ai. If you are not in a hurry send me your e-mail address, I will give you a good suggation. ALL YOURS.

ok this some good news :

SLT to launch IPTV from May

Shirajiv Sirimane in Ahungalle

For the first time, Sri Lanka Telecom will launch Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) from next May. Sri Lanka is the second country in the region after India to launch this technology.

Head of IP Broadband and Network division, Sri Lanka Telecom, Priyanka Udugodage said that they received the licence from the Telecom Regulatory Commission (TRC) over one year and since then have been making test transmissions.

"We hope to launch this service early May and initially over 80 percent of the country would be covered," he said. Speaking at the Cisco Media Offsite 2008 at Heritance Ahungalle he said that people for the first time would have the facility to watch their favorite TV programmes and News as and when a person wants. (On demand) The facility would be also available on Mobile via Mobitel as people prefer mobility and home users can avail this service though the existing SLT phone lines.

The local Telco industry is very competitive and one needs innovation to compete in the market.

"This is why SLT decided to launch IP TV," he said. It requires a subscription and an IPTV set-top box, and offers key advantages over existing TV cable and satellite technologies.

IPTV is typically bundled with other services like Video on Demand (VOD), voice over IP (VOIP) or digital phone, and Web access, collectively referred to as Triple Play.

IPTV finds Cable TV a threat to competition

By Ravindu Peiris(Daily Mirror)

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) introduced to Sri Lanka by Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) is threatened by the competition offered by Cable TV and Satellite TV providers.

SLT Head of IP and Broadband Networks Division Priyankar Udugodage said that although they can offer IPTV for low prices the Cable TV providers such as Dialog TV are already providing such for low prices. "That is where the issue is, the Cable TV competitors" he said at the Cisco Media Offsite 2008. SLT which has already obtained the license for IPTV can offer it wherever DSL is offered.

A significant feature of IPTV according to Udugodage is that in IPTV the customers decide when to watch the programmes and not the broadcasters. "The copper lines which have been placed can bring high speed internet to your computers as well as DVD quality TV" he affirmed.

Udugodage moreover revealed that if it was not IPTV they could portray higher prices but because it is IPTV they can talk about offering it to customers at a very reasonable cost. He revealed that SLT Broadband is experiencing a 100 percent growth with 60,000 households opting for broadband in the island.

"Although we laid the fibre up to Jaffna it was disconnected but it has been spread even to Vavuniya and they are able to enjoy ADSL" he said.

He confirmed that in the next few years the networking and communication system will be imperative to the Sri Lankans like water and electricity as the network in this country is evolving to an IP standard. "In the future there would be one converged network for broadband be it wired or wireless. Now we have separate lines and fees for everything but in the future it would be only the IP Wide Area Network Broadband" he said.

He pointed out that in those days it was a mere public communication network with just the voice being broadcast.

However now it has transformed in the last 15 years going beyond voice and now offering various multimedia services. He noted that it was Cisco who pioneered the IP routers in Sri Lanka and also supported the SLT to enhance and develop the company's networks.

this sound like it wont be cheap ?

Unknown said...

@ai,
IPTV wont be cheap. It will be almost as Dialog TV.

@podiman
In the course of time we can expect DTV to overcome all it's transmission problems and provide it's Subscribers with an excellent service. However, I think the 'raid-fade' problem will remain.
Are you aware of any such problems associated with IPTV ?
This info will help us compare the two services better if the price is going to be about the same.
Thank you

kayhaytha said...

Sorry, that should be 'rain-fade'

AI said...

if its similer to dialog TV i dont mind . cos we pa more then that to comet.

This episode on IPTV has a lot to write about. Having read this comment on introduction of IPTV in Sri Lanka, prompted me to do some research on the net. It appears most of the big league guys such as BT, Singtel, Reliance, France Telecom have or about to have an IPTV offering in their service portfolio. But then…this is Sri Lanka. I am trying to dig stats on the number of customers changing from Satellit,DTH offering to Cable,IPTV but still not got. All indications are with SLT joining the TV arena, will make the service provider industry more competitive and thus bringing the prices down which is a welcome move and make it more affordable to the average customer. SLT has by far the biggest and diverse customer segments, with people of all walks of life.

Also with rumours of SLT upgrading their core IP network to 10G, would make these services faster to the end customer. After all SLT needs a very good distributed ADSL and fiber network, and a resilient core network to provide bandwidth reservation for IPTV services. Also IPTV would change the whole landscape of the TV industry bringing in the Interactive part where the customer has a choice of when/where he wants to watch the movie. I myself would like to watch movies and episodes at the time I like.

Rumour has it that DTV in a frantic move, is countering the competition by giving free decoders to premium customers, and testing MPEG4 transmission to enable them to b’cast more channels. All in all, if SLT get things in perspective, we would be not having problems of sudden channel shut out during rains and winds (no more blames on Global Warming!!), and heavy pixellation in viewing, an intrinsic issue in the Ku band reception

sithma said...

@keyheytha
Dont try to compare the IPTV with DTH. IPTV is a interactive Tv .Even we do not have to worry about "Rain Fade". i.e. it will transmitted over Cables (Copper/ Optical fiber) where as DTH is through Ku band. If you receive transmission through C band this problem (rain fade)happens in minimum, (what I have experienced.) Also note that the IPTV would change the whole landscape of the TV industry bringing in the Interactive part where the customer has a choice of when/where he wants to watch the movie or Live TV . Suppose if you missed your favourite TV programme of two programmes are relay in same hour you can view one on live next by TSTV. How wonderful!! .You deside what to be watch at what time and not by the TV Station!!!

kayhaytha said...

@sithma

Thanks for that very enlightening info regarding IPTV. One more question, please. I currently have an ADSL 512 kbps connection. Will this be sufficient for an IPTV service or will I have to upgrade to the 2 Mbps connection ?

AI said...

the way i heard it 512K is not enough...

Unknown said...

The information I got also is the same 512K is not enough. I spoke to the ADSL area supeviser from my area that is what I got. So if it is 2Mbps connection forget about it. The advantages with IPTV is big but if it is beyond our reach what is the point. I hope it will come soon so that there will be a compitition.

LKDOOD said...

512K is definitely not enough for IPTV !

SLT 512K is lower than 512K
