The Switching Game continues......

Comet Cable is now playing the switching game at a much faster pace. This time Al Jazeera has been replaced by NDTV again.

Lets take a look at one of the switching saga's history.
  1. Fashion Tv switches to NDTV
  2. NDTV switches to Al Jazeera
  3. Al Jazeera switches to NDTV once again
It also seems that some Comet Cable customers have put up their connections for sale on the internet. Comet has to act fast or else it could be the beginning of the end for the pioneer pay television company in Sri Lanka.

Disclaimer : The above was the information that we received last and due to the nature of the switching game, at the point of posting there is a high probability that NDTV may have been switched with another channel.

with the corporate offer for Rs.11500 by DTV and the fact that even if comet goes digital one has to invest a similar amount has paved way for customers of Comet to swtich already to DTV.

Anonymous said...

CAN SOMEBODY PLS EXPLAIN ME HOW TO GET DTV FOR 11500/=

Anonymous said...

you get in touch with a person working in corporate sector whose company has been given this offer. Good if you have a relative working cause through their employee status you can get the connection.

if not you would have to convince the person or befriend such a person and get it through him.

just like when people went for special packages offered on dialog phone connections.same method all depends on how you work it towards your advantage.

I still cannot understand what you are waiting for... Comet plainly does not have much chance.

But if you still insist, I wish COmet Cable too best of luck in their future and hope they can come out of this tangled web.

Anonymous said...

I guess you mean (one above anae) that Comet will show Channel Eye.

SET Max isn't giving out licenses now. Its too near the World Cup.

Well Comet is not going to get away wtih Channel Eye. All we would see is 2 balls per over and tons of advertising. Advertising on the screen during the match will cover the current score and everything. NO WAY!

Can someone pls confirm the following.

Whether DIALOG TV has a better picture quality than Comet, better clarity & better sound.

Anonymous said...

I think blog admin should interview someone from Comet a director or CEO and findout whats their plan their mission targets for this year etc.,., this way I think we all can get some information cos reading mr.Scobies monthly colomn is like watching sex and the city.

Upto you blog admin

Hi,

I have had Comet cable for over 5 years. I am frustrated with their limited choice of channels and want to switch to something else. Does anyone know if its possible to get a refund from comet ? Is it possible to sell the connection ?

Anonymous said...

I think that it will be better if the blog admin could intervene & check with comet managment abt their immediate plans.

I also had enough of comet & refund or no refund i am planning to go for Dialog TV by the end of this month.

Anonymous said...

they wont give the refund.. i had hard time to get the money i pay for digital decoder had to shout few people for get it . so give up the idea about refund. yes you can sell the comet pakg. but who will buy it ?? and how much you going to sell it for .

comet has better picture quality then dialog tv (for the moment) dialog will fix this pretty soon.

blog admin to interview some one from comet will be harder then getting interview from billaden. cos these guys are always not in there seat. so good luck getting a interview.

and i dont think any of there staff knows whats going on there.

Dear Subscriber,

Please bare with us and have patience untill June 2006 as we have already signed up with a partner to launch our DTH service via sattelite and the necessary transponder space have been secured from Yamal 202 in coloboration with Sri Lakvahini.

With the implimentation we hope to add around 25 further channels on our three transponders (one shared with sri lakvahini)

Anonymous said...

above post is old one or new one ?? it says june 2006 ?? is our friend harrold back ??

Anonymous said...

Yamal 202 and sri lakvahini operate in c band. which means that quality of picture will not be as good as Ku band. so dont expect dvd quality pictures or sound on C band as it generates lot of interference as telcommunications also use c band. also you would have to invest more on c band equipment.

be straight and do not give just false hopes.

Anonymous said...

Hey Harrold,
Why dont you get yourself a blogger account and look genuine?

C Band has a lot of troubles, except it is rain proof. YOU WILL ALSO NEED A LARGE DISH ON YOUR ROOF! Quality will probably be worse than current Comet. According to LyngSat they only have one transponder at anyrate. Three transponders will be too expensive for SriLakvahini. Where will they get money from? And they have to pay royalties too.

June 2006? Harrold is mad. Maybe he had something to do with the LBN and CBNsat closure...

Dont fall prey to Harrold and other Comet people. Lets make our decision!

Anonymous said...

if that comment from Harold is true it will be cool. but he promises us same thing before so will keep finger cross. i don't see a point scolding Harold at lease he step up and post something. and i agree with above post get ur self account and update us don't think any comet users mind waiting if the information is true..

Anonymous said...

Even if harold keeps his promice the comet customers will have to pay an additional amount to buy new equipments.
Also who knows how much they will increase the monthly rentals if they add 25 more channels.

Anonymous said...

Dear Subscriber,

The date should read as June 2007 and regret my error on that.We will be using KU band and CONAX encryption on our DTH feed and Sri Lakvahini will be running a pararalled transmission on the C band.

We are taking every efford to give more channels without any additional charges and will entirely depend on how the subscriber base increases with the DTH launch.I can assure that the cost of conversion would be less than Rs.10,000/- and a entire new connection will cost around 17,500/- on the prevailing rates.

Thank You,

Harrold

This can be a another Harrold trying to screw us again.Cant be the big liar harrold working at comet cable.25 more channels??? the biggest joke of the year. When they do not have money to pay salaries how on earth can they invest. This is not our big old liar liar harrold.Just another harrold.

hmmmmm.... well i believe this if they print this on there next monthly guide. mr. harrold you take the space where mr.scobi post his comments make no sence at all. its like brief of cable guide. you get HBO bla bla this month with Star movies bla bla bla or and for sports fans addition and more BLA BLA BLA BLA. we don't need mr.scobi these stuff should print in cover page not at his coloume he should be telling something new.

Anonymous said...

yamal 202 is a satellite with only 18 c band transponders and no KU band transponders. only yamal 201 is carring 6 of each type.

Dear All

I've been a comet cable subscriber for 5 + years just to let u know that dialog tv is not rosy as it seems recently one of my friends purchaised a dialog tv connection but sorry to say folks it does not work when it rains everything goes blank and the message no signal e 46 comes on the screen when asked dialog tv says thats the way so when it rains no satellite tv.but accoding to some other technicians this can be corrected by using a bigger dish but dialog tv ain't providing that so in order to buy a bigger dish one has to spend around 7500 + 1500 for installation this is from a private place .any comments?

Anonymous said...

Will it work if we use the grill,Tomiya shall we stick to our old shit untill it closes down?

Anonymous said...

we better be with comet, cos rain or sunshine no interruptions.25mnts on sunday DTV has lost the singal.25mnts is way too much.Bad scene.Seriously the picture quality of comet is much better than DTV.
Dear Blog admin were you able to get hold of someone @ multivision to check out what they gonna do in months to come??

Comet Cable is not replying to our emails. They only emailed us denying one of the comments that was made.

It makes us seriously wonder about the stability of Comet Cable and the future of their existence.

Anonymous said...

Dear Hush,

I think you can help me out. What has the best picture quality? Comet or DTV?
Because i am trying to decide the best option here. Whether to stick with comet or buy DTV. Currently most of my comet channels are not clear.

Anonymous said...

I'm a comet subscriber from year 1999.Comet cannot go digital and they will not go digital.Their main aim is to get the money out from sri lanka b4 1st of june and the foreign investors will fly off too. They have nothing to do in sri lanka and there is no law to stop them either.I serioualy think nihal hettiarachchi era was the best at multivision. They had a vision.SInce pay tv business is a money spinner all these fellows are trying grab the controling stake.Just like the cricket board.

Anyway i think comet still has the best channel line up.the Star tv channels gives them the extra millage.DTV being the biggest they are still strugling to get star and even if they get the star premium package like star world and star movies far east signal with zero or minmum ads they will have to defineatly increase the rates.

I still believe comet cable can beat the rest if they go digital. With the facilities they have and the powerfull connections inside and outside the governemnt they can be no 1.But unfortunatly for us they will never ever will think of these. What matters for them is money. So what shud we do and what shall we do??Dear blog admin please suggest us the best option.leaving comet with their channel line up is not the solution here. Why cant these multivision freakos speak out.Tell the subscribers the true plan.

Anonymous said...

I would appreciate if the blog admin can check & give his opinion about the picture quality of both Comet & DTV.
If Comet's is better then we can wait till Comet's closure before buying DTV.
I just called Comet & inquired whether they will go Digital & the answer was PROBABLY in 4-5 months, & they cannot confirm an exact date.

TG's Blog Owner said...

@41st Comment
Comet does not really get much mileage with Star package, since they never advertise and do not have customer equipment to sell. Anyway with SET Max now on Dialog, Ten Sports won't be so important except for WWE fans (who watch it on Max Television for free). Dialog TV will have Ten Sports, Star Package, Disney channels and maybe more (like Sun TV) by April or May. That'll cover the entire Comet package except for NDTV and Hallmark.
Note that Dialog IS NOT struggling to get Star. They've already got it. Dialog IS NOT struggling to get transponder space. Dialog is only getting some equipment to improve the existing service before they go on. This way they have a more organized plan (unlike Comet).

@42nd Comment
Comet customer care can not and will not confirm the actual date of going digital. Comet will most likely dissapear from our skies before that. (Comet "Cable" last seen June 2007)

Unless the customer have paid for the next few months, they should cancel the service now and switch without wasting any more money. Wonder whether Comet will even send a Sorry Letter to their cutsomers.

Anyway, best of luck to Comet and hope they don't just leave their remaining customers in the dark.

Anonymous said...

all above maybe true. one way another comet will analog frequency will be stopped as those are allocated to wimax from TRC. so that is the deadline. maybe they will go digital maybe they will Disappear comet customers only have to get new DTH service feel bad about the staff in there . as far as i know comet picture Quality is much better then DTV.

if hetiarche and group done there job right comet wont be this situation today and the staff there took it for granted as well. i remember some bimbos was at customer care table didn't know a shit. they didnt even mind how much we pay. and there billing was always wrong.

Anonymous said...

As along standing comet customer from 1999 here are my views with regard to whats being discussed in this forum
DTV and LBN brocast digital signals while comet broadcasts analogue further it is a technologically proven fact that digital broadcast is superior quality than anlogue. so guys no more arguments DTV and LBN has much better quality.
I will definitly switch over to DTV when they get the star package and Ten sports till then i am with comet probably till their existence ends in june.i would habe moved now except i would miss some good programs on star world such as hero's,kofee with karan, prision break (coming in march)and Champions league football on Ten sports ( rights holder for south asian region)

I got no complaints my investment of about 18,000 Rs in 1999 has yielded good resulits for 7 years and its time to move on. no use complainiong as comet is in deep shit and it will be very, very difficult for them to be a viable buisness entity

Anonymous said...

Well said!

For its era, Comet served its purpose well. I also got in 1999, and then it was the best deal in town for Cable TV, as LBN was limited to Narahenpita only.

Change is inevitable, in any industry - hence I guess its time to move on, unless Comet truly have an ace up their sleeve.

Wishful thinking, but I leave it in their hands...

Anonymous said...

dont worry guys.. comet will show world cup as DD got the rights to air it on india.

Anonymous said...

First of all, plz dont even think that harold person was telling the truth. Yamal 202 doesnt even have a KU band spot. http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/yamal202.html That was probably scobie or sum1 else who
was tryin to mislead, and was talkin based on one comment (or post, i cant remember)which reffered to srilakvahini as a potential shareholder for comet.

As far as DTV reception is concerned, i dont own a connection, but i do recieve Ku band signals from NSS-6 fta, and i must say there has never been a disturbance due to rain. Of course NSS 6 footprint is much stronger on SL, and i think my dish is a bit bigger than DTV. But i doubt that dialog can change this because the problem should lie between satellite and subscriber, not DTV and the satellite. Unless, it is the uplink that gets cut off
during rain (which is highly unlikely).

I own a comet connection and I am planning to move to DTV. This is because my comet connection aint clear. Reception to my place is very poor and the latest is some lines which keep annoying. Spontanious signal outage, due to antenna movement and disturbance on channel 12,13,14 is regular... and very annoying. The technicians recently came and have placed my antenna at a very dangerous angle (not straight but slanted), and this caused some panic even among my neighbours, as they feel it could fall on their heads as it is very tall!!! Those who say reception is clear on comet are a lucky few

The swithcing game continues. Even though most ppl preffered al jazeera to ndtv, they went ahead and turned to ndtv. So now we can watch 24 hours of b.sh*t from our dear old big bro india. Even the poor kids cant watch a channel properly. Cartoon Network and Nick
are switched.

I agree with the person who said that gettin an interview with bin laden is easier. The top ppl are never ever available to talk to on the fone or even if we go there.

And as for the worldcup, whats the big deal abt DD getting rights to it. Have you watched the amout of adds n DD??? i have, coz its fta
on NSS6. and DD quality sucks.... really.

As as far as comet is concerned, i think june is the end of the road for them. They cannot even attend to their existing customers

properly. I dont see how they can go digital. And as for hettiarachchi, just watch what you
say about them. I think they are a reason for comet's collapse.

Newayz, i wish scobie and the clan all the very best. They're probably already applyin for new
jobs. Especially the poor customer care guy, who, by the end of the day, sounds like he's fagged out after ppl scolding him. Poor guy. I think only he works there. Wish 'em all, the very best of luck!!!

Anonymous said...

FYI,manager customer care has already left comet cable. So one by one people jumping out from a sinking ship.
Anyway we should not get upset. The 16,000 we paid over 10 years ago was one of my best investments.Whatever the problems comet cable was never switched off for a second. They had an uninterrupted service.Comet cable still has the best channel line up.Star world star movies are the best.Sometimes when you check the repeats and good programming I feel star movies is better than HBO.

SO guys dont get upset, lets face this together im sure comet cable will not dissapoint us and if things go shitty of course we can switch to another.

By the way can anyone tell me whether LBN is giving any new digital conncctions or they are only upgarding the existing customers

Anonymous said...

I promise you, Doordarshan is as bad as Channel Eye. Knowing that Indians are cricket mad, they will put tons of ads on the channel. And the Indians will still watch since they have no alternaitive.

But SET Max is looking at an audience outside India. They will have extra programming which promises to interesting. They would not mess uptheir coverage with too many ads.

DD is the national channel of India, like Rupavahini is of Sri Lanka. And they will do anything for some extra money apart from funding. Don't expect them to do such a good job of it.

Anonymous said...

well i bet still it will be something better then nothing..

TG's Blog Owner said...

Saw Comet cable on TV at Otter's Club. Quite a few lines on top of the screen! Must be not having clear reception.
Thats the problem with analogue.

Anonymous said...

The "lines on screen" issue is based on 2 reasons (In My Humble Opinion):

1) Local interference: I faced that after a re-location. Some where in the immediate vicinity, a microwave signal or any electronic interference disrupts the Comet signal. Especially prevalent to Channel 10 (Discovery) onwards, i.e (10 ~ 18). I heard this is very common to Colombo 04 & 05 suburbs.

Known remedy:
Called Comet, they raised the pipe 1/2 a length (approx 8-10ft), and aligned the direction a bit.

This remedy still faintly shows the line flowing from top-bottom, but much less of a nuisance, and does not make the signal go in-out. I guess the height increase puts the LNB at least a slight advantage to get a line of sight to Jaic.

2) Your kitchen microwave : )
I know I might get riddled for mentioning this, but its true, so here goes.

In my house, I when you switch on the Microwave oven, some channels (especially 13 - Star World) goes all haywire. Signal drops in-out with lot of audio interference.

I even sent my microwave for a check up at Abans (as its a LG), but they confirmed the shielding is in tact (phew!). Also confirmed personally by carefully inspecting a same model at one of their showrooms.

All that said, last I noticed probably over a year ago, Otters had a Spotbeam antenna, which is more resistance to interference than the Grill (that I have), so something must really be disturbing the signal there. Wonder if they now keep the Decoder on the microwave under the bar :-)

Anonymous said...

HUMBLE OPINION ACCEPTED!!!

hehe. but unfortunately for me, comet cannot raise the antenna higher. Its at the maximum legal level.

and the microwave oven does disturb the picture. it even (for a moment) disturbs my c-band satellite reciever. but thats ok. i dont keep heating stuff all the time.. hehe. but im glad to hear that im not alone.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if there is such a "legal" limit. I recall seeing two houses behind LP, where the antenna was raised at least 100ft! (no kidding, as they had to get line-of-sight over the LP rooftop). Those 2 houses had 2 sets of guy wires each, supporting the poles. I estimate at least 5 pipes were joined (100ft in total). Hence, I suppose if the Comet Installation Team can rectify a problem by height, they would go for it.

Unless of course, you are the guy living in one of those 2 houses I mentioned behind LP. :-) If so, I guess judging by the height of those antenna's, 100ft seems a safe "maximum legal limit" :-)

As for the Kitchen-Microwave disturbing both Comet (terrestrial microwave signals) and C-band, I wonder if the blog admin should open a dedicated blog for this topic under the generic TV-Radio-SriLanka blog? Just fishing an idea...

Good news on the DialogTV front though, me microwave does'nt disturb that signal :-)
