The claimed Press Briefing

Comments have been appearing on this blog claiming that Comet Cable carried out a press briefing to announce the launch of their DTH service in September and also announce the acquisition of the exclusive broadcast rights to the Rugby World Cup.

We have been checking on this claim since the first comment appeared and we state that we have not been able to obtain any confirmation from any source leading us to believe that no press briefing of this nature took place and that the comment was placed to mislead the Comet Subscribers. Even today's newspapers did not carry any reference to any press briefing of this nature.

If any press briefing took place we will definitely report it and if anyone has independant confirmation of the press briefing we would like them to email the press release to us on "tvradiosrilanka@yahoo.com" so that we can make a post based on it.

Certain bloggers have raised concern why Comet did not telecast the match yesterday. The reason is that Comet will only telecast the matches broadcast by DD and a schedule of the matches to be broadcast by DD can be obtained on the post below this one.

Guys, as you all know, Comet is in major financial problems.

Mr. Scooby and his australian company muscled their way into multivision by throwing out a local party who in fact saved the company sometime ago when it was about to be closed down. The word is that they filed various cases, apparently nearly 20 and bribed the judges and all sorts of people to get into the company. Now they have run out of cash bcos all the cash was used for bribes.

Before all this, Comet customers were all happy and Comet was about to go digital.

These stories about DTH are false. The TRC has given them a deadline to go digital and if not, will remove all the frequencies by end of June 2007. Mr. Scooby and his local partners do not have any money to even go digital, so how could they look at DTH? Plus, to do DTH one needs a Section 17 license from the TRC. They dont have that.

The industry news is that they are desperately trying to sell Multivision to someone. Various people such as Ceylinco, Thilanga Sumathipala, Abans, Dialog, ABC Radio, Maharaja, and various international companies.

But all have turned down the offers cos of the mess it is in. The staff of Multivision has started to leave the company and currently there are no senior staff members who knows the business. There is one local director named Chris, who does not have any business sense, is living out at JAIC Hilton and wasting the last few rupees left in the banks.

The pioneer of pay television in sri lanka is in fact spending the last few years of its time. No sooner, the company will be closed down like Lanka Internet and Mr. Scooby will not be anywhere to be found.

It has also been reported that the government, although owns 50% of the company, has not received a single cent from the company ever since it started back in 1998.

It has been a bad show!

as far as i know, the government, through SDA owns only 12.5% of comet. if it owned 50%, comet would have been another railway service.
