What can we expect when digital comes

And if it does come and when it comes, then Comet subscribers will get a much better service than they are getting now, which is stating the obvious.

By going through the comments on the blog it seems that subscribers are raising questions about the new digital service.

Will a Dish replace the tall antenna?
Highly unlikely since Comet we believe would opt for DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) instead of DVB-S (Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite presently used by Dialog TV). We are not sure whether the antenna will need to be at the present height though but since DVB-T also needs line of sight the height may remain the same. You may not have to use the same antenna and they might change it to a new one but if the antenna is kept the change over to digital from analog will be cheaper.

Will their be a limitation in capacity?
Yes, since they are operating on a wireless frequency they will be having limited capacity and will be able to carry only a certain number of channels per frequency but this can be overcome by adding other frequencies to expand. This is not only for Comet the same limitation exists with Dialog TV too since they can only add a limited number of channels per transponder and they also expand by adding new transponders and adding channels to the other frequencies. The operator who has the highest bandwidth at the moment and can expand without adding anything is LBN since they are operating on DVB-C (Digital Video Broadcasting - Cable). We are not sure how the limitations works for digital services over copper cables and we hope that someone can enlighten us on this.

What are the new features?
Electronic programme guides, Internet Access, Movie on Demand, Pay per view and a whole host of others. These are the general features but it depends on what Comet decides to implement and what not to not to implement but according to a website they had earlier for Comet Digital some of these services were listed.

Will there be rain fade?
Not sure but it is highly unlikely

The above is from the information that we gathered from external sources and it was not supplied by Comet Cable. We are not technicians and not experts in DVB-S, DVB-C, DVB-T and if there are any factual errors please highlight them to us.

Comet Digital according to the rumors is expected to launch in September 2007 and we would like our fellow bloggers to keep us updated on the latest on Comet as the days progress.

as far as we know there is no special wiring other than the digital decoder in LBN presently.

LBN can add around 400 channels without adding anything. DVB-C can have around 400 channels. If it is a anolog system, then it can have around 70 channels only. Please refer the my following comment.

70 new channels from india.

With over 70 new TV channels expected to be launched in the next three to six months, consumers will get more choice of television content.

But this is causing worry for cable operators because the technology currently being used allows only 70 channels to be telecast.

Applications from over 50 companies to launch 72 new cable channels are pending before the ministry of information and broadcasting (I&B) for necessary clearances.

The new launches will include channels from leading broadcasters and production houses such as NDTV, INX Media, BAG Films and TV18 group among others.

Currently, about 220 channels have the necessary permission to downlink their channels in India. Downlinking of channel means permission to download the channels from the satellite for further transmission and re-transmission.

Once the downlinking permission is granted, the total number of cable and satellite channels in the country will cross the 300 mark.

But the addition of more cable channels is a worrying factor for the local cable operators as most of the cable distribution platform in the country is in analogue (television channels distributed on co-axial wire).

In the analogue mode of distribution, cable operators can not offer more than 70 cable channels to consumers. Therefore, it will be difficult for cable operators to telecast all the new channels, industry experts said.

According to the government plan, India should switch from the current analogue transmission of cable channels to digital delivery between 2010 and 2015. While CAS has been implemented in parts of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, the government is still exploring faster rollout of digital cable in the country.

Apart from cable and satellite channels, there are a large number of local cable channels available in all parts of the country. In addition of satellite channels, there are over 200 local television channels available in the country.

According to sources in the I&B ministry, about half of the new applications are for news and entertainment channels while the rest are for regional channels.

There was a rumor that commet digital plans are postponed by another two months. I dont think its true. C C told there is no such thing and they will be going ditital NEXT month, and he also told that they will not charge Rs. 5000. Saimply the decoder will be replaced. thats it.

My idea, all comet ppl must be ready to upgrade no matter whats the cost.thats the only way to get comet goin.

dtv going to increase the package prices, so comet still have lot of chance

there is DTV users planing to buy comet new digital connection. some wanted me to call and find out. looks like they are not happy with DTV

wait till the eggs are hatched before you start counting the chickens. The launch of digital has now been "pushed back" to middle or end of september. What poppycock! There is a equal chance of pigs flying.

If you guys belive this then you deserve what you get. ppl may not be happy with DTV for alleged increasing package prices but we are now paying 1800/- for 18 channels while DTV customers are paying 1610/- for 54 channels. DTV guys must be lauging their asses off at us

Why can't the comet cable guys update their website to infome the custumers about the latest devolopments. The website never changers.

As far as i know from the beginning Commet said they will launch digital by mid september. I called them even yesterday to find out if there is a shift in the date. they sayd its not so . commet will be going digital mid september. they said.

I dont think DTV guys have time to laugh at commet, cos they are facing a serious situation with bad picture quality , bad sound quality ,bad c.c and lately bbbaaadddd pricing.

so lets not worry aboub who laughs at whom. lets keep calling commet and keep ourselves updated.

If anyone get any news POST it.!!!

good luck.

even i heard the same from beaning .. mid of September. i called them to change my antenna alignment as one cable got broken. they said no change of plan. September mid.. 60 channels + internet no price change.only they gonna replace the decoder (forgot to ask do we have to pay for that :D )

Guys soory to butt in like this but i was a comet customer who changed to DTV. I would just like to state my opinion regarding picture quality and sound quality. Everything is realtive and belive me when i say this the picture quality is not that bad and in some cases better than Comet. Sound is stereo for all 54 channels but there are problems with regard to different sound levels for different channels but we can set individual sound levels for each channels as the decoder "remebers" them.

With regard to price level i just want to say that comet is far far worse than DTV. Comet charges 1800/- for 18 channels without the associated costs like transponder rental which is about 1 m USD per year per transponder. comet should have been able to give the channels at a much lesser cost for all these years! I dont think the pricing even comes into the picture when comparing DTV and COmet as per this moment DTV is giving a far superior service content wise than comet.

Even though i am a DTV customer i will still say that if comet goes digital it will be great news for pay tv customers in SL. We will really have a great choice in selecting the provider. But for me comet has let me down enough times in the past for me to be suspicious. What i would say to all you comet customers is keep your eyes and ears open when september draws close. If comet gives any bullshit about the time taken to implement digital then you will know for sure that they are lying.
I wish you guys the best of luck in hoping that comet will go digital who knows if the service is good i might even be tempted to get a comet connection again.

But also keep in mind that DTV customers are enjoying 54 channels for only 1610/- where as your hard earned 1800/- is taken by comet for giving only 18 channels.

As a comet subscriber who changed to DTV let me add my comments. Wats this big fuss about pixelation. When it rains with thunder and lightning Comet is the most unsafe piece of equipment you have at home. Well I experienced it once and subsequently for the slightest rain I switched off comet after the first occassion when it took my TV , Computer and every thing that was plugged, got screwed maan. I had to replace all that was Electric and plugged. Comet also brought destruction on my whole house including the painting of my walls. Now I use DTV AND I am thrilled with the quality. So let DTV pixelate, the fact is I do not watch TV when it rains after the Comet experience. Plain and simple

Iam the guy who posted regarding news of commet going digital and not charging 5000 adn stuff... i admit what the above 2 guys say.

in fact we are paying 1750 just for 16 or 17 channels. so they better give us the decoder free. and my doubt is after going digital dont know what kind of technical issues we may have to undergo.

so guys lets not expect commet will go digital smoothly there could be issues we may have to face. if worse comes to words ill go for LBN or Dish tv ( i dont care what feed it is from)

keep posting guys...

we pay 170/= for about 12 channels and 4 free channels. wow!

if comet no go digital this year i am going for dialog.

Where are u located ?

My cousin had same problem in Hokandara

Dont rush in.
DTV is not the only other provider. look at LBN who is expanding and having the best offer, and also look at Dish tv 200 odd channels for 1600 odd rupees. Dont rush to DTV a former comet but now DTV guy once posted saying by going to DTV was like jumping from pan to fire. adn told me also to think twise before going to DTV.

And also IPTV is coming soon. in just about 6 months we will have good choices.
so DONT RUSH IN and select DTV only, they are not the best.

I am the person who posted on august 15th @ 6.14 PM. I am not saying to go to DTV but just eleoborating on your options. IF LBN gets BBC world and Ten sports then in my opnion its the best provider availabe today in Sri lanka. So if you are luckily living in an LBN area go for it. My problem with DishTV is Indian feeds of HBO,Star Movies. The indian feed has commercials and if you are not bothered by commercials in middle of movies then Dish TV is ok for you. Dish TV also hasn't got HBO Hits, HBO Family & HBO signature.

So guys give a thought and make a decision but also pressurise comet to keep its word about digital by september.

Anonymous said...

LBN already started Ten Sports and very soon BBC will be added to the list

Dialog is launching DVB-T like Comet Digital soon. So there is going to be heavy competition.

Dialog DVB-T will not need LINE-OF-SIGHT like Comet. They will just use normal antenna like our local television today.

Bad news for Comet!

What is DVB-T in the first place and where does it says that COMET is going Digital.
