Give customers the true picture please

Things don't seem to be going Comet's way these days. The June 1st deadline is now fast approaching and there seems to be no response from Comet management regarding the status of their future. Comet will have to switch over by June 1st in order for Dialog Broadband and SLT to launch Wimax services in Colombo and the suburbs.

We are not getting any response from Comet management and we hope that the subscribers are not left in the lurch with an antenna and decoder that does not have any transmissions to receive and only gathers dust.

We hope that Comet will put its subscribers out of their misery by informing them of whether Comet will pursue digital technology or ask subscribers to look for an alternative pay television provider and arrange for some sort of compensation to subscribers. The redesign of the website done earlier is welcome but is not enough to improve subscriber confidence.

At the moment many Comet Subscribers are moving from Comet Cable to Dialog TV or LBN due to the superior picture quality, programming and pricing.

The only good news is that even though "Dialog TV" have been awarded exclusive rights to broadcast the ICC Cricket World Cup it seems that other operators such as Comet Cable are also in with a chance to carry to out the broadcast. Please read "Will the Dialog TV broadcast of the ICC World Cup really be exclusive" for more on this subject.

Comet never did have a proper plan and if they had they would have been untouchable in the DTH market as Dialog in the mobile industry.

Internal conflicts, arogant and careless attitude coupled with an outdated technology is going to take them down the drain. Its a pity with the content they had, they could not capitalise and go digital.

I to feel realy sorry for the remaining staff and not for comet which is the last stages.

Is there anything at all that we the Comet Cable Subscribers could do collectively to coerce Multivision to at least issue a statement regarding their position after 01 June 2007, since individual attempts in this regard have not been fruitful to date ? Should we prepare an on-line petition ? Should we petition the Southern Development Authority to take-over Multivision since the interests of it's subscribers are at stake ? Should we all stop making the monthly payment from March 2007? This should provoke some reaction from Multivision since they are obviously having a serious cash-flow problem, judging by their notice which crawls across our screens all night.

Is this the end of a good thing?

I’ve been a subscriber to Comet Cable from almost its inception and it’s a very sad state of affairs and is going to be a costly one for me from the looks of things.

The pay TV service has had a very rocky path but to there credit Comet has never been off air even a minute but the current circumstances may just lead to it permanently.

After reading the contents of this blog and other sources I learn that Comet will have to close down if they don’t go digital. My immediate reaction was to call Comet and get it as it were from the horses mouth what there position was with this. My efforts were a waste of time to get in touch with a responsible individual from the establishment as the only people that were answering my calls were junior executives that told me that they were not informed by the management as to there plans. From what I have heard and read on the blogs – tvradiosrilanka, cbnsat and lbn, its typical of a pay TV service to do this in a state of crisis as it was the case with LBN and CBNsat during there ordeal.

I don’t know if other subscribers will agree with me, but on my part I’ll be satisfied if initially they carry only the current 18 channel if they switch to digital, After all they can carry the 13 local stations and it will lead to a total of 31. And being a digital telecast there would be no snowing picture, lines running on the picture due to other signal interferences, tall antenna for line of site to transmitter and other annoyances. Also a digital service will give a host of other features. Comet available digital terrestrially will be big threat to other such services in the grater Colombo area and even beyond and also be much superior in quality than sat TV.

Let’s hear from you Comet!

The fact that Multivision is deliberately avoiding making a statement regarding it's post-May 2007 plans lends credence to the growing belief among it's subscribers that the Company will cease operations after this date. We should NOT take this lying down like wimps. Let's take the reactions of the subscribers of CBN Sat and LBN when their stations were closed down as examples. They made a fuss, sought & received publicity and even wrote to the President about it. What are we doing as a group to address our potential problem ?

Let us write to the newspapers about it for starters. If anyone out there knows a Reporter, please ask him/her to investigate this impending disaster that will befall a segment of our people.

Bear in mind that nobody is going to help us in this matter if we do not take the initiative. Remember, Comet Cable currently has the best range of channels in terms of entertainment.

Lanka internet (premium ISP at sri lanka)been shut down there operation cos financial mess. SO IS THERE ANY OTHER COMPANY AT SAME TRACK :D

TG's Blog Owner said...

COMET CANNOT GO DIGITAL WITH MICROWAVE BROADCASTING. The frequencies available are already booked by WiMAX services and other wireless telecommunication services.

So whatever, you say about quality of Sat, we will have to go with it. No chance of Comet doing that though. Satellite technology is expensive and Comet could never afford it.

You should either take a stand and do something to wake up the management, or switch to LBN or Dialog.

Guys,

Latest news doing the rounds is that Dialog is to buy Comet cable!!
How true is this?

comet is pretty silent! whats to be done. are we going to be left in the lurch? Or is it that come June 1st DialogTv is buying over comet. I heard that Dtv is planning to charge comet customers Rs. 13K for the new Dtv equipment.
Someone pls verify this. Is it just a rumour spread by comet to avoid the rush on June 1st? is it...?

TG's Blog Owner said...

Well, Dialog does have the money to do a thing like that. But I doubt its really true. But they may be making an agreement with Comet to buy out the subscribers and provide Satellite receivers for a lower price. Thats good for everyone!

Also, See http://anaeblog.blogspot.com/2007/03/lanka-internet-shut-down-services.html.

Comet cable management(chalmawy dev australia) cannot negotiate or sell its shares to DTV or any other service provider due to nonpayment of royalities to southern development authority.
If you guys remember the paper advertisement few months ago where SDA has issued a notice.
We should not pay our monthly subscriptions.

Anonymous said...

okay...
so looks like thats the picture. If shares cannot be sold, its the end of the whole episode. whats to happen to our money? Do we just give up like that.. and then go buy DTV or some other,...

"Dialog subscribers unite";
anyone?
what are your thoughts on this?
lets heat it folks. someone pls do some thing.

this is the end of the road.I think we should get hold of a jounalist and try to write the untold story.Should hit the headlines like lanka internet story.Does anyone know a journalist freind who has the time to go to multivision stay for hours to meet a director for 5 mnts and start jazzing up a story???

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

AI said...

Hey Faizal

Be positive, man. Maybe they want to replace your analogue equipment with the latest digital technology before June 2007

AI said...

i'll be positive when i see the digital decoder ;)

You shouldn't fall prey to Comet fellows and Too Loyal customers who want to deceive you. The was the reply to you was writte shows that it s more of an advertisment than hope giver.

Make your own choice!

AI said...

what you trying to say anae??? sounds more like gibberish??

Anonymous said...

Is it true that dtv dont have a licence for re-broadcasting ?

Anonymous said...

Anae has been labelled as a DTV stooge in other posts elsewhare. We should not pay too much heed to Anae's comments in the Comet Cable Blog. Anae has been painting a very poor future for Multivision subscribers and indirectly promoting DTV.

Anonymous said...

Have Fun With COMET CABLE !!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I heard that dtv doesn't have a licence called Section 17 and they will shut it down again if the prez doesn't approve, before the world cup .If that happens back to the old drawing board!!!

Anonymous said...

dtv dont need that as under merger they have the license and media license as well as asset media has the licenses and dialog buying over the company means all its assets and licenses are part of assets of a company.

so we do not need to be technical here as all the bases are covered.

yeah the drawing board is what is required at comet though..as wimax licenses are to be approved in June and both dialog and slt is ready to launch and trail is already launched both by slt and dialog. so frequency at least 2 comet will have to give up.

launch of digital in comet is just a fantasy man.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above comment. when i asked dialog they said they will get back to me on that. but i have strong feeling they dont has it. we will be in shit again

TG's Blog Owner said...

Come on guys, don't be angry with me about what I have written. I have posted only the truth about what happened. The way things are going, Comet is realy going to end soon. Don't criticise me for being truthful.

Also can you not give a chance to repent. I am not promoting DTV (although I have a little problem with LBN; won't mention it here) and I do not work there.

@ Faizal
Sorry about the mistakes. I was typing too fast. Here is what I said again:-
" You shouldn't fall prey to Comet fellows and Loyal customers who want to deceive you. The reply to your comment was written in a was that shows that it advertises more than giving hope.

It's your decision. Make your own choice! Don't be fooled by others."

Please give me a chance to help you. And please bear with me for my typing errors.

re: anonymous @ 12.04am

i'de like to know how you got into that link. from which part of the comet website did you access the above link?

the problem is, even if the comet page was really updated recently, how can we comet subscribers trust them? they have been promising to digitize for the past 5 years or more. and the other thing, my existing comet antenna keeps shaking for the wind etc, even though it is held by guide wires. still, it shakes a bit. the effect isnt felt that much coz we're using analog. but we all know that digital recieving requires much more precise positioning and even a minute movement of the antenna will result in signal loss in a whole set of channels. how successful will digital MMDS be in SL????..... i.e, IF it is implemented by comet.

AI said...

ya i am not worry about what anyone has to say. comet was best thing was in the market long time ago. and i paid 16200/= plus i got one month free subscription. i don't have any regrade at all even comet shutdown June 1st not what something i want(just worry about the workers) there .. it was good investment and uninterrupted service.

i am not sure comet is really in financial struggle. they had deadline to pay around some amount (around 50 million or something)to SDA (southern Development Authority). deadline was 2 months or something they manage to pay that and continue service.

i really want comet to go digital and continue service. don't wont DTV to get the market monopoly. and its shit thing they are doing stopping other payTV showing the world cup. this is nation who love this game and they should be enjoy it what every cable tv they want.

if Dialog is really future today give something any other cable TV operators don't have(new channels ,, broadband internet.. ect ect). make this is something you really should have it in home. not you have no choice take DTV . try to get the customers that way. not been a big bully and use the power and money they have.

Anonymous said...

dear faizal,

I agree with your comments dialog is nothing but a big bully , they don't have any corporate ethics at all, why do they only want to give TV for such a big boasting futuristic company !!
very soon this whole pay tv industry will be a fool's paradise each one fighting for market share, Indian players will dominate the market they have enormous buying power for content , they will conquer this industry in the Asian region , dialog is new to the game of pay TV they better learn the rules of playing this game from the leaders . I think all should have rights for things like cricket its an island wide craze and should not be limited to a few !
I will watch ICC on DD or rupavahini!!!

Anonymous said...

Why dont u all watch ICC on Channel I.

Anonymous said...

Dear faizal,

who will shutdown COMET June 1st?
Be positive man....!
nothing will happened ?

any way dont u try DishTV?

why dont u try this... http://www.8thstreetlatinas.com/

Have FUN !

Anonymous said...

DTv or asset media they do not have the section 17 approval. This is the main reason why DTV is not getting additional channels. The zee package is of course we should not talk about as there is nothng much to talk about cos we all know DTV signed up with Zee just to add the channel line up.DTV cannot get the star package as well as ten sports etc mainly bcos they do not posses section 17 approval.Only cometcable has this approval in Sri Lanka. When all other pay tv companies were shutdown except comet was running cos when the CID came and checked the submitted all required documents.

I still blv comet will not let us down and they have not either. So guys dont worry lets be happy.Eventhough they say future today and buying umbrella's to cover the dish we have the BEST CHANNEL LINE UP SO FAR and we are happy for it.Hence im sure 1st of june or 31st of december comet will not be shut down.Viva forver!!!

Anonymous said...

Any one Pls explain how to Get section 17 ?
Has DTv got....? I think they are doing illegal operation in Srilanka.
IF any one do... why TRC?
